this probably won't be weird or interesting a week from now but...

just wanted to note the fact that scarlett johansson is releasing an album composed of ten tom waits covers (and one original), and that a single has been released:

wtf??? actually, i don't think it's that bad... it's sort of a radio-friendly shoegaze take on a song that's pretty good to begin with. i kinda like her voice, even. but mostly i'm posting this because of the weirdness factor.

(p.s. what's salman rushdie doing flirting with that poor young girl anyway???)

it's sort of sinead o'conner but chopped and screwed sounding.

would have been better if Woody Allen directed it.

woody allen is another man twice her age that needs to leave her alone!

woody allen makes his best movies when he has an object of affection.

i'm probably the only willow house person who will say this, but i *loathed* match point, if that's what is generally being implied in the above. i kind of hate what woody allen stands for. he made a few good movies in the seventies though.

I couldn't keep a straight face during match point.
The story is good (the tragedy part and all) but the dialogue is so completely empty... very soap opera.
I do think he needs a new "Mia".

to me, it's that warmed over, ingmar bergman silence-of-god bullshit that gets me. and the fact that it's not a particularly well-rendered noir. i think no country for old men is a better silence-of-god noir, even though i think it's also kinda silly philosophically.

plus i hate the way woody portrays women. but that's true of all his movies, especially the good ones.

oh and my opinion on the music is she is a first class star. first class choices the single is enjoyable and i dont listen to tom waits. in the pantheon of actress makes pop record scarlett is number one by a long shot. lindsay lohan just announced she is working with snoop dogg for her next sure fire disaster of a record. back in the day i did root for justine bateman in light of day but she couldnt compete with older sisters joan jett and susanna hoffs.

woody allen makes movies about woman the way philip roth writes books about his dick. both incarnations are unsettling but are some of the greatest creative works in american cinema and literature. dan, you must know that deconstructing harry is all about soon yi previn. she is the elephant in the room. the unspoken force the story revolves around. match point is similar in a way to tom wolfe's (although in my opinion differs in quality) recent book about college sex life in that woody is accepting boundaries in his life (ie being faithfull to soon yi) yet still leering and rtequires a surrogate to continue to orchestratw the emotional ebbs and flows that have coursed through all his films. i wouldnt be surprised if the storyboard for match point was done with paste ups from us weekly - which in a way is perhaps the point.
