speaking of witchcraft...

c/o vice magazine's not-as-obnoxious-as-you'd-guess webtv stuff... a five part mini-documentary about gorgoroth, one of the craziest norwegian black metal bands, and its jailed-for-violent-acts lead singer gaahl. more here, including subsequent parts. it gets weirder towards the end.

I watched the whole thing. How could I not?
Aside from the alleged torture part, I have trouble believing this guy is for real. How could he do all the band stuff, touring, contracts, art direction?, go to jail,
recording plus all the other stuff in life and still live so
creepily secluded? You know when he agreed to the interview he spent some time hiding his laptop, airport, cell phone and t.v. with cable.
His art schtick is a little bit taken from the pages of Hitler. Otherwise, I don't totally disagree with some of his views - kind of basic dislike for government influenced too much by religion.

that norwegian black metal scene is real weird. gaahl has his own wiki entry:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gaahl

he's our age! dude looks old. he's also gay and racist.

there's also this book about the scene that's supposed to be worth a look called lords of chaos. there's been lots of church burnings and weird inter-band battles and stuff. check out the wiki on the dude from burzum, who murdered someone from a rival band:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Varg_Vikernes

apparently a few of these guys are kinda for real, and gaahl is one of them. the ideological stuff isn't as weird to me as it once was. it's basically social darwinism, with some weird pagan crap and nazi affiliations thrown in. none of these dudes strike me as terribly sharp, from what i've seen. the pageantry of it all is pretty weird though, and there's a tabloid quality that makes it tough for me to look away.

the part at the end where he stares is amazing.
